Zuji has some of the cheapest flights in Australia but now charges a booking fee. Recently we have found flights on other flight booking sites for $2200 when the same flights on Zuji they were just $1600!
Always check the final price for extra fees before booking. Some online booking sites such as edreams, webjet & now Zuji, charge a booking fee & the credit card surcharge can be higher than the airlines fees (edreams for example had a flight priced at $227 but managed to go up to $262 when all fees where included. Compare this to buying with Expedia where there are no booking fees & will only charge a credit card fee if the airline does.)
Allows you to ask for cheapest flights from say Sydney to Phuket (it will find indirect flights if they are cheaper)
Finds the cheapest flights between 2 locations.
You can even ask them to send you an email when flights (one way) drop below a certain price so you are the first to know!
Other secret ways to find cheapest flights
Expedia Brazil has been found to be cheap in the past but can be a hassle as you need to use google translate to work out what says on the website & then check the exchange rate.
We have found flights for Sydney to LA for August 2012 & found flight prices OVER $500 cheaper per person than with other search engines. The tickets were booked via expedia.ie (Expedia’s site in Ireland) when they found they were the cheapest in the world! This works when Australian currency is strong but may no longer work.
Find the Best Deals from a range of Airlines on one page:
It is often cheapest to fly to New Zealand with the low cost airlines including Jetstar & Virgin Australia but the following sites can compare a range of airlines including some you may not realise cross the Tasman such as LAN Airlines & Aerolineas Argentinas!
Be careful with airline fees.
The low cost airlines in particular try to put in extra fees to make up for their low fares.
- Credit card fees that aren’t immediately apparent (you can sometimes avoid by paying by direct credit called POLI).
- Make various options you don’t need such as domestic flight insurance or seat allocation or try to get you to take baggage you may not need (so remember to unselect these).
- Some even charge a fee to send your itinerary by SMS.
Low Cost International Airlines
Low cost airlines are now operating exceptionally cheap flights to Asia.
You can get some great deals but you have to pay extra for baggage, inflight food or entertainment (so take this into account on total costs).
Air Asia flies to KL, Malaysia and then on to numerous routes in Asia from Sydney, Melbourne & Gold Coast.
Scoot flies to Singapore and then on to the Rest of Asia from Sydney & Gold Coast.
If you want to compare their prices you often have to go direct to their websites as they are often not included in the flight comparison sites.
Remember to always check out the final prices for comparison as some sites add extra booking & credit card fees right at the end!

Flight Booking Tips
You can sometimes fly into one city and out of another eg. Into London but out of Rome. It saves you lots of time and means you don’t have to fly back to London.
If flying to Europe check out Round the World Fares. They are often similar in price to a straight return to Europe and means you can often get free stopovers on the way there or back. Or just recover a little from jetlag by having a stopover on the way!
If you are going overseas such as UK or Europe and are making a domestic transfer, it can sometimes be worth looking at local airline sites (ie British Airways in UK or BMI in UK) as they are often cheaper than booking the domestic transfer complete with Qantas or other airlines. But remember if you’re flight is delayed you may miss your connecting fllight & have to pay full price for a new flight.
When comparing airfares, particularly international fares, it is important to ensure you are comparing like with like.
- Check the airlines
It might be worth paying a few dollars more to be on a leading international carrier with better food, service and entertainment, rather than ones that charge you for baggage, entertainment & food. You are also more likely to be cramped on the low cost airlines. Qatar Airlines on their Airbus A330 has 8 seats across the plane whereas Air Asia flying the same plane has 9 seats!
- Check the routing and stopover times
Cheap fares often have middle-of-the-night departures, make more than one stop or have lengthy stops that push out the total travelling time. Some travellers are willing to spend eight hours in an obscure airport in order to get a super-cheap flight but many are not.
- Check that the flights you are comparing are going to the same airport
Many cities have multiple airports and what you save on the airfare you could spend on a transfer into the city.
- Make sure all the quoted fares include taxes
Some retailers still quote fares excluding taxes and surcharges!
- Not all travel agents have the same flight deals:
Always get quotes from a few different travel agents/companies before you book
- Finally before booking the flight always check the airlines own website directly as sometimes it can be cheaper than the travel agents or online booking sites!
Frequent Flyer Tips
Frequnt flyer point seems to be becomingt worth less value over time due to airlines increasing the surcharges and taxes on flights. It can sometimes be as cheap now to fly on a budget airline than pay the surcharges & taxes for a flight.
So how is the best way to use your points?
As the number of points doesn’t change for the route it is best to use the points at peak times such as Christmas or school holidays. However these are the time when the tickets disappear the quickest too, so you need to book in advance (months)!
Another way to maximise your points is tha is often better to travel further or on normall expensive routes. If you have the points and the time, an Round the World Ticket can offer some of the best value (you often need approx 130,000 points depending on your frequent flyer programme)
Low Cost Airlines within Europe:
Make sure you do a search of the low cost or budget airlines in Europe if you will be flying between countries as they often work out far cheaper than flying with the flag carriers eg BA, Air France etc.
Always book with your credit card for flights, as if they go bust your credit card is often responsible for helping you get to your destination. Always check with your credit card company first!
